SURPRISE!
I guess I thought I’d be a little more jaded by my fifth Western Hemisphere autumn, but it shocks me still – the way the colour jumps out of the trees and yells on cue like at a surprise birthday party.
And then the way that surprise-party energy wicks into you as you walk through the forest, til you’re beaming like the birthday girl because that’s how happy the light and the aromatic air and the crunch underfoot make you.
Man it’s lovely.
I’ve taken you and the Man to this forest before, remember? This time I went alone and chanced upon these two hilarious little characters. They were perfect afternoon company.
I suspect you’re all seasoned autumniers out there. Or does fall make you jump out of your skin and grin a little sheepishly at all the attention, too?
I unashamedly admit that it’s my favourite season (although I think I say that with every season, but Fall may be my favourite favourite). I miss it where we are now. A few of the trees change, but most of them have already had all the joy sapped out of them by the burning heat of the summer. When we went north to visit family last month, I couldn’t contain my joy. I spent all of the drive saying, “Look at that! Did you see that? Those are so gorgeous! Oh, it’s my new favourite tree!” It never got old…
I think the two-season tropics have opened our eyes and hands extra wide to receive this kind of beauty. I’m glad you get such a kick out of it too. (:
Val-please write a book…Warm Regards, Kirk
You’re a dear, Kirk. The dream is not that big yet, but I’m getting bolder all the time. Thanks for helping the emboldening happen.
Wonderful post. Lovely.
So glad you enjoyed the colours too. (:
I love autumn.. after living 14years in a country with only one season (summer) I can’t imagine going back to that and not seeing the magical colors of the trees every years
I love fall. I love that we get four seasons in Montana, but fall is just too short here. No sooner have the leaves changed and there is a foot of snow on the ground.
Is winter the longest season?
yes! it is cold for 7-8 months usually!
Oh dear how majestic. I told my roommate that if we’re both in Palestine again next year, we’re definitely flying to Europe over the eid so we can experience some fall beauty! I’ve missed it so.
Please please do!
I love your pics! It is the same over here in Belgium! We just walked every day , each time 8 km!
Oh wow, that sounds like quite a regimen! Enjoy it while it lasts – I know we are. (:
The forest picture is stunning.

Thank you, Emmerson!
“…autumniers…” Yes, and “estiviers” also. You have the most interestingly abstruse vocubulary. I’m beginning to suspect you grew up on the same Victorian novels I did. Great creekside pic, by the way. Ken
Guilty as charged. I also grew up playing the “Authors” version of the Go Fish card game, the authors in question being all the Victorian greats. I highly recommend this as a stocking stuffer (maybe for your own stocking if you don’t have it already!).
