Yes to Maastricht
As a recovering perfectionist, believe me when I tell you that sometimes you need a little jolt of indulgence. Even when your will is balking and you don’t feel you’ve done enough to deserve a treat. Especially then.
So when my friend and foodie partner in crime invited me to visit her old stomping grounds in the south of Holland, I blinked once and said Yes to Maastricht.
And now let’s drop everything and emit a primal scream. I want to live here — surrounded by 20 glorious squared meters of bread, cheese, pastry and wine.
The charming disarray of this second-hand haven reminded me how much I love muss! And the off-kilter and absurd.
Like this gorgeous absurdity of a cathedral-turned-bookstore/espressobar.
Best of all, we sniffed out several dozen of these antique beauties. I can’t wait to share the exciting scheme we’re brewing up for them and the Bunker! Soon, I promise.
But the sweetest reward of treating yourself to a getaway is the return home with eyes hungry for everyday beauty.
A happy, wide-eyed week ahead to you, friend.
So fantastic. And what a good word of truth to other recovering perfectionists ;)
I do so love to see where you’ve been travelling lately. I’m with my parents for the week (not in Indo, sadly), and they say to tell you hello. I’m waiting for a bad cold to blow over so I can head home with my boys and a nutcracker I stole from my grandmother’s house. Adding beauty to the every day.
Hello back to them! The nutcracker sounds lovely. And your little boys even more so. (:
That cathedral is amazing! I love the idea of having an espresso, a pastry, and an old book at my disposal, all with the spiritual/historical ambiance! Wonderful.
They’ve turned some cathedrals here into luxurious apartments or office buildings, and that doesn’t seem respectful. But this place was magical…probably because books and coffee are sacred to me. (:
You had me at twenty meters squared of bread, cheese, pastry and wine, and then you had to throw in the cathedral turned bookstore. I’m boarding a plane at daybreak…
I’ll meet you there! I can’t wait to go back. (:
Where my parents live in Belgium, it is only 30 km to Maastricht & I love it ever I was there as a kid. The shops, the patisseries, the food. My ultimate food destination was 3 times already the 2 michelin star restaurantt: Beluga! You must go there sometime! :) Georgous pics too!
Ooh, thanks for the tip! I’ll save it for our next special weekendje weg/dagje uit!
